ROTORUA ATHLETIC AND AXEMEN'S CLUB

annual meeting SATISFACTORY SEASON IS REVEALED IN ANNUAL - REPORT ELECTION OF OFFICERS The annual general meeting of the Rotorua Athletic and Axemen's Club was held during the week. The president, Mr. C. A. Clarke, presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report revealed a satisfactory year's working notwithstanding the heavy loss on the first sports meeting held on January 2. The club membership during the season, had reached 43. Appreciation was expressed of donations from Messrs. H. Aston and A. Walden. Two valuable members of the Club, Mr. C. R. Tapper and R. G. Ewing, had resigned during the season. The club's seeretary, Mr. F. White had also heen compelled to resign owing to his leaving the district and the position had been filled by the assistant seeretary, Mr. E. C. Sherman. 5 A series of successful 500 tournaments had been held during the .season and the proceeds had heen of eonsiderable assistance to the elub financially. Thanks were due to Mr. S. Phipps for conducting the tournaments and to Mr and Mrs Costell'o for the use of their room. The first meeting of the year held at Arawa Park on January 2 had included chorming*, running-. and cy-

cling events for which total prize money to the extent of £145 10s was given. Entries in the chopping events had been fair but the runners and cyclists had not given the expected support. As a result of this lack of support, and the decrease in the gate takings, a debit balance of £59 16s 5d had heen incurred on the meeting. More Satisfactory Result The June 3 meeting, however, had yielded a much more satisfactory result. A programme had been carefully drafted and the club had safeguarded itself by including a proviso giving it the right to cancel any event in which sufficient support was not forthcoming. Two hundred pounds had been offered in prize money and this had possibly been responsible for the record entries in the chopping. events. Gross returns from the meeting had amounted to £357 13s 7d and after paying all prize money and general expenses a balance of £131 0s lld remained to the profit of the meeting account. A credit balance of £8 9s 4d had been carried over from the previous year's balance sheet. Revenue from all sources during the.past season had amounted to £149 12s 8d. After wiping out the loss from the January meeting, and providing for eommitments, the balance of £82 ls 3d disclosed by the balance sheet could be regarded as very satisfactory. The report was adopted as read. It was decided to place on record the appreciation of the club for the work done by Mr. W. J. Costello in visiting different sports meeting and canvassing the support of competitors for the club's meeting. Election of Officers The election of officers for the 'ensuing season resulted : Patron, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P. ; president, Mr. C. A. Clarke; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Cunningham, C. Pepper, W.
