The "Fost" at all times welcomes correspondence from its readers. It must, however, be clearly understood that we accept no responsibility for the views expressed by our correspondents. To the Edtior.vu, Sir, — Would some correspondent kindly enlighten me as to the exact significance of the alterations now in progress in Tryon Street. Quite recently the area referred to was laid down as a broad consolidated thoroughfare, an improvement which appeared amply justified by the congestion of motor traffic during past Christmas seasons, when ears were parked from the bridge to the Whaka I Post Office and beyond. Now, the middle of this street has been dug up. i and the hard surf ace replaeed by soft earth for the reeeption of trees. For whose delectation are these trees to be planted? Certainly not for visiting motorists, to whom the restriction of spaee would cause more annoyanee than any pleasure that they would derive from contemplation of the trees. I yield to no one in my appreciation of trees as a feature of landseape, but I maintain that they need to fit in with the general effect, and I would ask what kind of aesthetic support the proposed plantation would receive from its surroundings. Its very existence, too, would be threatened by the probable impaet of ears, unless strongly railed off. The carrying capacity of an important thoroughfare is seriously curtailed by the innovation. Where is the corresponding advantages?. — I am, etc.,
