UNCOMFORTABLE POWER

A woman who has the mysterious power of making watches and docks stop the moment she enters a room is employed as a charwoman in a London suburban home. The employer of the woman, in telling the story to. a Daily Mail representative, said she begins work at 8.30 a.m. "We know exactly what rooms she. has. been in, and what time she entered," said .th0 employer, "for every clock stpps. im- ■ mediately. It causes ua much F.orry and confusion, but she is sucb a good worker that we do. not like to get rid of her. The only clock that rpsists her influence is a grandfather clock in the hall, which goes on ticking no matter how near she approaches.. s I am told that she has the same effeet on the docks in a neighbo.ur's house where she goes after leaving us. "A doctor, asked if he could throw light on the mystery, said it was knpwn that the chemical properties of the skin of certain persons had an effect on various metals and stones. Quite a number- of women," he added, "believe that they improve pearJs by wearing them. It may be that as soon as the charwoman in qnestion enters a room an acute electrical rpaction is set up, but it is more than likely that this extraordinary feat of stopping c)ocks is induced by the chemical actio.n of the skin.
