herr schacht telephones he is returning to germany SIIARPLY TAKEN TO TASK BERLIN, Monday. Though Herr Schacht's movements since his Bad Harzburg speech have not been. disclosed, it is denied that he has gone to Italy. Ple has telephoned to Berlin that he is returning to face the charges made against him. The Finance Minister, Herr Didietrich sharply replying to Herr Sehacht says: "It is untrue that the Reichsbank has been used to conceal the insolvency of the public finances. The Reichsbank has not lent the Reich a single penny. It is true that few municipalities are in diffieulties, but only two to three thousand are effected out of a total of 55,000 throughout Germany. It is also true that the foreign indebtedness appears greater than in the public figures, but the details are not available." "Herr Schacht might well deprive, Germany of her remaining credit. The country's greatest danger lies in nervousness and alarmist repoi*ts which injure the nation's credit," Herr Didietrich adds. Herr Schacht, ex-president of the Reichsbank, in a public speech, said that Germany's liabilities. were greater than had been disclosed and that the country was on the point of bankruptcy. He left the country immediately after making this speech.
