Gymnastic Classes The Rotorua Gymnastic Club will re-commence classes at the "Sylvana" this evening at 7.30 p.m. Basketball Dance. No effort is heing spared by the committee of the Rotorua Basketball Association to make the annual dance, and 500 toumament which takes place in the Majestic Ballroom next Thursday evening, a great success. A feature of the evening will be the number of • novelty dances with confetti, streamers and balloons. Sewerage Connections To date the total number of connections made to the sewerage system in the suburban gravity drainage area by the Rotorua Boro.ugh Council. is 216. Recently the number of applications for connections received by the Council has shown a marked falling off. Notices were served on property ownex-s in the gravity drainage area under Section 224 of the Municipal Corporations Act in July last and as the time allowed under these has now expired officials state that owners will be well advised to make immediate arrangements to have their properties connected as, in the interests of public health, early action is likely to be taken by the Council in cases of neglect to comply with the terms of the notices. Relief Work Restricted After a "silent" week, the Rotorua Borough Council yesterday morning was able to start a number of men on work under the Unemployment Board's relief scheme, though unfortunately only on a restricted scale. Only married men could be provided for, 85 being started, and these have unavoidably been subjected to a .20 per cent, cut in their weekly earnings. The hourly rate remains unaltered, but the number of hours per week have been reduced, the maximum wages payable to the individual heing now £2 as compared with £2 10s. j Owing to laclc of funds it has not been i possible this week to engage any single men and the 46 on the list have had to be stood down. Fire in Tutanekai Street. The Rotorua Fire Brigade was summoned to a small outbreak of fire at the back of Mr Hefferen's shop in Tutanekai Street last night at 9 o'clock. A spark from Costello's smoke house, which is adjacent, apparently had set fire to some cocoanut matting belonging to the cricket association, which Mr Hefferen stores at the back of the shop. Fortunately the damage was not extensive and is estimated at about £12. Had it not been for the fact that the shop is divided by" a concrete wall, the outbreak might have proved more serious. Hockey Cups Presented. At a very successful hockey dance held in the Majestic Ballroom last Saturday evening, Mr F. G. Reed, president of the Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Association, presented to the Arawa and Taniwha teams the Robertson and Wairua-a-Rangi Cups, which the respeetive teams won in this season's championship matches. Mr. Reed congratulated both teams on their fine showing, particularly the Taniwha's who won all their matches and scored 43 goals with only five ! against them in 10 matches played. ! He said it was very pleasing to see ! the cup go to the Taniwha Club for i the first time, the cup having been ! presented to the association as a memorial to one of their players. In conclusion he thanked members of the executive committee for their work during the season and also the public for their support. Lively Farewell It is not often, in these days of depression, that such animated scenes are wit'nessed at the Railway Station as occurred yesterday morning, the oc'casion being the return to Auckland of the Kiwi ladies' hockey team. As the train steamed out of the station many heads were showing out of the carriage windows and cheers were given by the team, these being returned by the Rotorua hockey supporters and officials assembled on the platform.

Golf Course Flooded Sunday afternoon was the only opportunity during the ladies' championship toumament for club members and other non-contestants to use. the Arikikapakapa Golf course. Many golfers were in consequence greatly disappointed when the torrential rain which commenced shortly after 2 p.m. made further play impossible. The rain was so heavy that within half an hour the course was quite unplayable, many of the greens and fairways being flooded and water rapidly filled bunkers and hollows. No Permit. Described by Mr J. D. Davys, who appeared for the defendant company as a matter of "sheer inadvertency," Lee Bros., a Rotorua building firm, was yesterday convicted and ordered to pay costs for undertaking floor renovations in business premises in Arawa Street, without obtaining a permit from the borough building authorities. "Ghost Van" for Pirates. A special "ghost van" equipped to detect unlicensed wireless sets has been put into operation in London, and proved so- successful that two pirates were deteeted in five minutes. News of this caused a stampede of the "pirates" and Somerset House was besieged by 10,000 people eager to have their sets licensed.
