NOVEL TRAFFIC CONTROL.
Certain very interesting traffic control experiments have been carried out in Paris reeently by the Prefect of Police, M. Chiappe. At a busy crossing a system of control by the ordinary pedestrian has been in operation for the past two months or more. Here, when the pedestrian wishes to cross the road, he presses a button, which switches on a red light on each side of the road, signalling vehicles to stop. The apparatus is so designed that it can only be operated at intervals of 35 seconds, and the signal stops vehicular traffic for 15 seconds, which should be enough to allow the ordinary more or less able-bodied citizen to cross over. The most astonishing thing about the idea, to those who know Paris traffic, is that it seems to be a success.
