NEW ZEALAND CUP

"The Judge.")

cessation's encouraging form at auckland promises well. "MY OWN" NICELY WEIGHTED.

(By

Reviewing the running in the Mitchelsoh Cup with the idea of finding the winner of the New Zealand Cup,' one would be inclined to name CesIsation as the most likely, taking into consideration her present light weight and her finishing effort on Saturday. At the end of half a mile in the Mitchelson Cup, she was with Spear Lad and Spearmiss at the tail of the field. In the back stretch she made a forward move, but she still had seven horses in front of her at the bottom of the straight. Here she put in a ® fine burst that brought her into fourth place — an impressive performance. She sticks on fairly solidly, and the : two miles might not be beyond her. Taurua was a good third fancy for the Mitchelson Cup, and the fact that he is a full brother to Te- Monanui (who won this race four years ago) and had been racing well among the good hack over a middle journey, suggested that he was a possibility. With Prince Val he carried on the running to the home turn and then retired, to finish fifth. Taurua may

come good over a distance. When Taneriri moved up into third place with five furlongs to go he loolced a distinct possibility, and he was still there at the turn for home. Then he faded, failing to run on. Perhaps he has had enough for the timo being. Motere, the last Auckland Cup winner — and he has not won a race since — flashed into the picture in the Mitchelson Cup making for the straight, and then made a showing, which proved to be only a flash in the pan. The next Auckland Cup may see him come into his own again. My Own finished a long way "back, never getting in the firing line. In fact, it seemed that she was always in difficulties. This mare is in the New Zealand Cup, and her chance there reads much better than it did last week, for there is a vast difference in the weights. At Riccarton she has 161b less to carry. (A further form and racing review by "The Judge" appears on Page 6 of this issue.)
