BOOK RECOVERED
BAG CONTAINING RACING CLUB'S LEDGERS FOUND LYING IN VACANT SECTION • With its side slashed open but its eontents intact, the brief bag containing the books of the Rotorua Racing Club, which was stolen from the car of the club's secretary, Mr. E. La Trobe Hill, on August 28th, the night of the Racing Club's annual meeting, was recovered yesterday in a vacant section at the rear of King George V. . Hospital. After ascertaining that there was nothing of monetary value in the bag, the thief or thieves apparently abandoned it in the vacant section, where it was found early yesterday morning by Poata Erekana Huni, a young Maori relief worker, who was taking a short cut across the paddock. Huni immediately reported his find to the police, and it is stated that he will be duly paid the reward which was offered for the recovery of the books. Despite the fact that the bag was unlocked at the time it was stolen, the thieves slashed open the side in order to investigate the eontents. The books were slightly damaged by exposure to the weather but are still legible. The theft was committed between 5.15 and 7.15 p.m. on the evening of August 28. Mr. Hill parked his car outside the Rotorua Club in Hinemoa . Street and when he returned, found that the bag which had been left on one of the seats of the car had been removed. The theft occurred at a very awkward juneture, as Mr. Hill required the books for the purpose of the club's annual meeting that evening. — n
