BOROUGH COUNCIL

REGULAR MEETING GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE AND ROUTINE MATTERS. ! P . OHINEMUTU IMPROVEMENTS. The regular meeting of the Rotorua Bovpugh Council was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) and Crs, N. M. Keane, O. H. Coleman, G. Urquhart, E. Johnson, Alhert Smith, L. J. Bayfeild, W. Galbraith and W. H. Wackrow. Mr. F. Wilkie wrote in connection with a drain through his property in Malfroy Road, and asking to have an opportunity to confer with the Council or a_committee with referencq to same. — ;The matter was left in the hands of the Drainage Committee.

A letter was received from. Messrs. Burghan, Hyde, Pajrton and Mrs. Blomfield, Ruihi Street, Mrs. F. Richardson, Devon Street, and Mr. J. McLean, Seddon Stpeet, asking that soil should be supplied for top-dress-ing the grass margin of the road in front of their premises. — It was decided to supply a load of soil to each | applieant. Ohinemutu Improvements. The hon. secretary, Ohinemutu and Tarewa Komiti Marae, wrote advising that at a meeting of the Komiti held on the 25th inst., it was resolved that the attention of the Council be directed to certain requirements in the villages. The various matters for which attention was suggested were the erection of a new destructor and the removal of the existing one at Ohinemutu, the renovation of four specified houses, also at Ohinemutu, the installation of a street light on the new drain bathhouse, and the putting in order of a tap in Tarewa village.

Cr. A. Smith expressed the opinion that if the destructor was to be reconstructed, it should be established on a different site, where it would bo out of the way. Cr. W. Galbraith asked what funds were available for carrying out this work. The Mayor said that he did not tbink the Council had the funds available to replace the destructor. It was not so dilapidated that it required total reconstruction. Cr. Smith said that the four houses mentioned required painting. Other councillors described them as "an eyesore," and it was finally decided to refer the whole matter to the Works Committee.

West End Recreation. The secretary of the West End recreation area wrote stating that at the last meeting of the recreation committe it was resolved that the Council be asked to get the easterh portion of the reserve, including the extra half acre, cleaned up and grassed while relief labour is available, so that the swings, etc., may be erected for the coming summer. It was also requested that the Council hasten the planting of the hedga along the houndaries of the reserve and that the decision to transfer an extra 18 feet off the eastern boundary to the High School Board be reconsidered in view of the fact that the playing area is none too large at present.

The matter was left to the Reserves Committee for attention. An application was received from the secretary of the. Rotorua Golf Club, applying for remission of rates under Section 75 of the Rating Act, in regard to property now leased by the club. The application was referred to the Finance Committee. Messrs. ' McDowell and Co., Ltd., wrote requesting the removal of a tree growing in front of their office in Tutanekai Street. — The request was referred to the General Committee. A letter was read from the District Engineer, Public Works Department, Tauranga, advising that where it is necessary for a local body to arrange for the removal of poles on main highways, the rate of subsidy which applies to work involving the removal of poles may be paid on the local body's share of the cost of removal. — The letter was received. The Works Committee advised that it had authorised the engineer to supply three loads of soil for top-dress-ing the frontage of Mr. R. Kirk's pioperty in Fenton Street. The committee reported that it had also informed Mr. Kirk that the dust nuisance complained of by him could not be dealt with at present.
