MORE OF MURUPARA MONEY RECOVERED

further discovery SEARCHERS FIND BURIED BUNDLE OF BANK NOTES APPROXIMATELY £50 While searching the ground in the vicinity of the spot where" portion of the Public Works payroll stolen from Murupara camp on May 4, was discovered by a Maori forestry worker just over three weeks ago, two Public Works Department employees on Wednesday afternoon discovered a further "cache" of the missing money. The two men, Mr. J. Walker and a companion, were searching the ground by probing the surface with roughly contrived spears when the instrument they were using struck something resembling a package of paper, but which on investigation, proved to be a roll of bank notes of between £40 and £50 in value. The money had been buried loosely with the notes rolled together and with a small amount in silver and coppers underneath. Extensive Search Made In collaboration with the. police, the Public Works Department has undertaken a search of the ground in the vicinity of the spot where the first find was made, and it is presumed that the two men were participating in this search when the second sum of money was discovered. As it was believed that the remainder of the missing money might be buried a short distance beneath the surface, roughly constructed spears were used to probe the ground when earrying out the search. Immediately the discovery was reported, the police were advised and Detective White of Hamilton, with Constable Roberts of Rotorua, left by. car for Murupara. The police have been pursuing investigations since the first portion of the. money was discovered but are extremely reticent regarding information bearing on the case, and refuse to disclose what amount of the original payroll of £2158 is still missing. It is believed, however, that the greater portion of "the money has been recovered.
