ABANDONMENT OF AMERICAN BUILDING PROGRAMME FORECAST U.S.A.'s ECONOMY PROGRAMME
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. Sept. 29, 9.20 p.m. WASHINGTON, Tuesday. The New York "Times" reports that authoritative circles indicate that the Administrations' heaviest blow, in its efforts to cut Governmental expenditure, will be directed against the Navy. . The contemplated eliminations of the naval building programme for the fiscal year, 1932-33, comprising construction believed to be necessary to build the fleet up to the strength prescribed in the Lgndon Treaty, will mean a saving of approximately 40,000,000 dollars. The abandonment of the destroyer programme appropriated for by the last Congressional sessions will save 28,000,000 dollars more, while it is also widely believed that a further 20,000,000 dollars reduction can be gained by "passing over" money necessary to modernise battleships. Discussing the last mentioned phase, one prominent official recently asserted his belief that America will never build another battleship, and following this revelation much discussion is now centred on the idea that the U.S.A. is preparing to take a naval holiday.
