TOWN PLANNING

LLEWELLYN

CWTT.T.TAM

(To the Editor). Sir, — As considerable interest is being manifested, and rightly too, in town planning, , kipdly allow me to add a few suggestions, principally as to tree^ plahting. I believe there is a feeling in the d'irection of planting soipe of the streets with native trees. This I think is a mistake. There are such a few that are adapted for transplanting and even should that be overcome they assume a rather ragged and dejected appearance. I would suggest planting sonie of the streets with fruit trees, say apples, pears, cherries and plums. This is largely done in Germany, some of the big cities have miles of the above trees planted in their thoroughfares, and they derive quite a revenue from the sale of the fruit. The produce is auctioned, the purchaser picks the friiit. In addition, oranges and lemons would grow and do well, and be a great attraction to the townspeople, ^and particularly to visitors, the majority of whom have never seen them in growth. They are a great sight in any stage of their growth. Japanese flowering cherries make a wonderful show too, and shoujd be more extensively planted. The fruit trees I have mentioned should be allowed to grow naturally an'd not be excessively pruned. My fifty years' experience in horticultural matters justifies me in writing as above. Thanldng you for the privilee*e. I am.

Okere Falls.
