TOM WALLS AGAIN
SMART DIALOGUE EXTRACTS FROM "CANARIES SOMETIMES SING." ENGLISH COMEDIAN'S WIT. Ernest: "It's quite un-Eng!ish? I know, and against al lthe teachings of Eton and Oxford to discuss one's wife in other than a favourable way — but — why did you move that bird?" Geoffrey: "I'm always hoping he may hear something which will make him really sing." Geoffrey: "He meant,. never interfere in a woman's life unless you are a great friend of her husband's." Ernest: "But I defy you to show me any man who was happier than I during the first six months of our marriage." Geoffrey: "Six months! That's a long time!"
Geoffrey: "I must say that I am 1 looking forward to meeting your wife tremendously, Ernest." Ernest: "Ah! She has a heart of gold, but I wish she were more like your wife, Geoffrey." Ernest: "No, Gepffrey — no! I belong to the old school who believe that havi'ng made your bed you must lie in it with the woman you made it for." Anne: "It's a marvellous hook, Mrs. Melton. It is a passionate plea for the freedom of women, a demand that they should be free people in mind and body — it's the modern school, Mrs. Melton. Elma : "I wouldn't call it moclern — nearly every nice old gentleman who drove me home in a taxi ten years ago tried to tell me about it." Anne: "This is my room; attractive, don't you think?" Ernest: "Charming, charming! A little daring, don't you think?" Anne; "But so, vital. I don't care what an artist does so long as he's vital, do you?"
