BOYS BAND

FORMATiON ASSURED ENTHUSIASTIC PUBLIC MEETING DECIDES TO SUPPORT PROPOSAL ROTARY CLUB'S FINE EFFORT A "public meeting, ealled by the Rotorua Rotary Club for the purpose of forming a boys band' in Rotorua was hsld last evening in the Citizens' Club. There was a most representative attendanee of citizens. After expressing his pleasure at seeing so many citizens present, Mr. H. Buddle, president of the Rotary Club, invited his Worship the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, to take the chair. "I opening the meeting," said Mr. Jackson, "I would first like to. say that I am completely in sympathy with the movement. I was sceptical at first as to the response the proposed band would get from the public, but as a result of the efforts of the Rotary Club and the good work already done by Lieutenant Tregilgas in the training of the boys on the °ld instruments, I am no longer sceptical.

i Mr. Jackson said that the boys' \ band would be a valuable adjunct to 1 the Municipal Band, and apart from | that, it would greatly help in the | development of a love of music. [ "As the details of the formation of | the band are more familiar to mem- | bers of the Rotary Club than to myj self," his Worship concluded, "I will i aslc Mr. Buddle to explain those mat- ! ters to you."

Rotary Club's Efforts | Mr. Buddle said that the position was that, after various efforts to raise funds for the purchase of instruments, the Rotary Club had raised about £52. The club set out with the original intention of handing over a complete set of instruments, but, owing to the financial stringency at present operating throughout the country, they were not as successful as they had hoped. According to the regulations of the club they were not supposed to indulge in any extended canvas for any kind of movement, but the directors had agreed to see that the band was put on its feet. "This does not mean that the Rotary Club will not support it," continued Mr. Buddle, "for it wishes to

3 see it successful." | "I have drafted the following re- = solutions," continued Mr. Buddle, = "which I will ask you to accept." | 1. "That an association to Pe | known as the Rotorua Boys' Band As- | sociation (Incorporated) be formed | by those present at this public meeting convened by advertisement in the Rotorua "Morning Post" of September 22, 1931, who agree to become members, and that application be j made for incorporation under the Incorporated Societies Act, 1908. | 2. "That a committee consisting of I Messrs O. PI. Coleman (convenor), E. T. Johnson, A. R. Ryder, Lieut. Tregilgas, and the mover, be set up to draft a set of rules to be submitted for adoption at a subsequent meeting of the association to be con- | vened by the said committee. i 3. "That the annual subscription | shall be: — Playing members, 2/6; i non-playing members, 5/-. I 4. "That it be a reeommendation to the committee set up to draft rules that the officers of the association be : — Patron (the Mayor for the time being of the Borough of Rotorua) ; a president; two vice-presidents (one of whom shall be the president for the time being of the Rotorua Rotary Club) ; a secretary, who shall also act as treasurer; with a committee not exceeding five, and the bandmaster wh-o will be on the committee ex-officio. All the resolutions were carried.

French Instruments When discussing the first resolufcion, Mr. G. Nelson, who was appointed convenor of the committee, gave a resume of the work done up to date. He also stated that arrangements were being made with an Auckland firm for the purchase of the instruments, which would be of French manufacture. British instruments would have been purchased, he said but they were far too expensive, whereas those decided upon could be procured for £150. "We can •pay a deposit of £50 and excellent 'terms can be arranged for the payment of the other £100." he said. Mr. Nelson then thanked the various musicians who had helped in the project, and as a private citizen, and not as a member of the Rotary Club, asked every one present to support the movement. He was sure the boys would be keen and he hoped the movement would get the support it ! deserved. Mr. Johnson said a vote of thanks was due the Rotary Club for the fine preliminary work it had done. He considered that they had had an uphill fight. He also commended the action of the Borough Council in obtaining the services of such an excellent bandmaster as Mr. Tregilgas. Mr Rowland was appointed secretary pro tem. Mr Jackson thanked those present for their support. He said that he felt sure, judging by the enthusiasm of that representative gathering, that the boys' band would be a success. He said that it was not all plain sailing yet, as there was still £100 to find and finance was scarce, but he was confident that the difficulties could be satisfactorily surmounted. "The interest the boys are taking in the band is well worth our help," concluded the Mayor as he closed the meeting. i
