THE PINK "LADY"

DARING THIEF'S CLEVER RUSE TO CLOAK SAFE-BREAKING. SYDNEY, Wednesday. A neat figure in a smart pinlc frock, a eriminal masquerading- as a woman at Ultimo last week, the police are convinced, and assisted in two daring robberies. The police reaehed their conclusion that the thief was a man when, in a surprisingly unladylilce way, "she" rapidly outdistanced "her" companion in crime during a chase. Early in the night, Sam Coroneo, a fruiterer, of Harris Street, Ultimo, was resting in a room at the rear of

his shop, but, in gazing into the shop through a spyhole in the door, he saw the "woman" in the pink frock rifiing the till. Coroneo attempted to thrust the door open, but there was a heavy weight pressfng against it. Then the door yielded, as a strange man sprang away from it and fled with the "woman," who had extraeted 12s from the till. Coroneo chased them, but, during the pursuit, lost the slippers he was wearing, and as his feet were tco tender for the hard roadway, he had to cease the painful chase. At this stage the "woman" had easily outdistanced "her" fellow fugitive. Coroneo immediately told the police his unhappy story. They had previously been informed that the "woman in the pink frock" and the man with her had a little earlier. knocked a man down and robbed him, but when the police arrived at the scene the thieves and their victim had vanished.
