The final of the Rotorua Golf Club's eclectic handicap event, played last week-end, broughtsome surprising results. The winner, Dr. W-. S. Wallis, , defeated the Colonel by as many as ten strokes. He did the very creditable eombined,, score of 61. Several oth'ers also defeated hogey and the general standard of the cards returned was a great improvement on pre- : vious competitions. The weather during the week-end could hot haVe been improved upon. The eotirse was in perfect condition, espeei'ally the greens, which were playing very fast and accurately. The 18 hole putting green in front of the club house i3. rapidly ihiproving and is ilow becomihg quite an attrac'tron to the golfers'. Messrs. S. E. Carr and i R. C. Smith cett'ainly have their fair share of it. They 3pend several hours week-end putting round after j round. Mr. C. Kusabs did two very creditable rounds in the eclectic handicap. In the first round he returned with a gross score of 73; then in the following Saturday he managed to improve on several of the holes that caught him on the first oecasion. He came | second in the competition with a combined nett score of 64. Some of the. viciting ladies who are entefed for the NeW Zealand Ladies Championship Tournament, which commenceg on October 8, have already arrived in Rotroua. Aniong their number is Mrs. B. B. Wood, of Wellington, who is spending much of her tinre practising assiduously on the course. Mr. E. La Trobe Hill got a surprise on Saturday afternoon. To his opponent's, plea"?ure his ball found the cut) from the tee at the seventeenth. By the time Mr. Hill reaehed the nineteenth practically all the Rotorua golfers seerned to have seen this stroke of genius and pfomptly availed themselves of the opportunity of becoming better aequainted with this master of the noble game.
