New Cricket Association. Thp recent move to form a Bay of Plenty Minor Cricket Association has now received the official approval of the' New Zealand Cricket Council, and the counties of Whakatane, Taupo, Tauranga and Rotorua have been constituted as thc territory embra-.ed by the new Association. The Bay of Plenty Association will be eligible to challenge for the Hawke Cup at present 'held by Waikato. The headrquarters of the new Association are to be at Rotorua and it will have representation on the New Zealand Association. Generous Action Appreciated. The generous action of' Mr. E. Shalf oon in allowing the visiting Ponsonby Rugby players to attend his dance at the Majestic Ballroom last ' Saturday, t'ree of charge, was greatly appreciated by the Rotorua Rugby Union, and it was deeided at the Union's meeting on Monday evening to send a letter of thanks to Mr. Shalfoon. ; | World's Oldest Church. ! When speaking at the Rotorua Ro- ! tary Cluh's luncheon, Mr. E. Earle Vaile said that St. Martin's Ghurch, Canterbury, which contains the font at which King Ethelbert was baptised by St. Augustine in 596 A.D., has been in constant use for Christian services for 13 centuries, and is acknowledged to possess the longest unbroken history of Christian service in the world.

Rotorua Boys' Band A public meeting has been called by the Rotorua Rotary Club for this evening at 8 o'clock, at the Citizens' Club, for the purpose of forming a Rotorua Boys' Band. A cordial invitation is extended to all those citizens who are interested in the proposed band.

Rotorua Retail Traders The annual general meeting of the Rotorua Retail Traders' Association will be held on Friday in the Citizens' Club, at 8 p.m. Members are reauested to make a special effort to be present. Bowling Tournament. | Subject to the dates being apj proved of by the South Auckland Bowling Centre, the Rotorua Club { deeided at a meeting last night to hold their annual tournament during the neeks commencing on February 8 and February 22 next year. The posters will be forwarded to clubs throughout the Dominion shortly and, as usual, a large number of entries can be confidently expected. Bowlers throughout the Dominion look forward to this fixture and as soon as the dates are known, holiday arrangements are definitely1 fixed. Bowlers' Opening Day. At a meeting of the committee of the Rotorua Bowling Club held last evening, the president, Mr. T. Kelly reported that he had interviewed the head gardener of the Government Gardens and had arranged that the opening day of the season should be fixed for Saturday, October 10-. Telephone For Bowlers. At last night's meeting of the Rotorua Bowling Club it was deeided to instal a telephone in the bowling j pavilion in the Government gardens | for the use of bowlers during the i playing season. Crockery Broken by 'Quake. j The earthquake experienced in Rotorua early yesterday morning was. of varying intensity in different parts of the town. In some areas the shock was only slightly felt, but in j others it was unusually severe. In several cases residents report that crockery was dislodged from shelves I in their homes, a most unusual oecurranee.

Gas and Smoke Mask The gas and smoke mask which the Rotorua Fire Board deeided to purchase for the use of the fire brigade has now arrived. It is a Davis mask made by the makers of the famous Davis submarine escape safety deviee. This type of mask is in use in both Sydney and Melbourne, and has proved effective in combatting praetically any gas, especially carbon monoxide. The mask is made of rubber and straps across the face with easily adjusted sljp buckles. A eanister of chemicals is attached to the waist and is connected to the mask , by a flexible, though non-pincheable, tube. When in use, the foul air passes through the bottom of the canister, where it is purified, then np the tube to the mask. The used air escapes through a valve at the top end of the tube. The effectiveness of a eanister is two hours of continual use.
