EAST COAST SUFFERS
CHIMNEYS DOWN AND PEOPLE . FIGHTENED IN THE ORPOTIKI DISTRICT ORIGIN NEAR NAPIER The earthquake experienced in Rotorua shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday was widely felt through the North Island. It was most severe along the East Coast, between Hastings and Opotiki, though it is also reported to have been fairly severe at Wanganui. In Rotorua the hsock was felt with varying intensity, being most severe, apparently, at the Western side of the town, but no material damage has been reported. In the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne, where the shock took the form of a sharp jolting motion, a certain amount of damage is reported. Both Opotiki and Whakatane report damage in homes and shops where the contents of shelves and show windows were thrown down and smashed. On the coast road south of Opotiki a number of chimneys are reported to be down. The origin of the disturbance is believed to have been off the coast in the vicinity of Napier and Hastings.
