Radio Telephone to Europe The Postmaster at Rotorua, Mr. George Nelson, advises that the radio telephone service now operating hetween New Zealand and the United Kingdom has been extended to Germany, Belgium and Holland. j Forestry Work Work in the State Forestry plan- • tations in the Rotorua district has been pushed well ahead during the planting season. Altogether 20,000 acres have been planted ont during the last 12 months and over 40,000,000 seedling trees have been established in the nursery series in preparation for next year's planting operations. Holiday for Point-to-Point A request is made by His Worship the Mayor of Rotorua, Mr. T. Jackson, to all professional and busiiiess firms who usually close their premises on Saturday, to close to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon in order to give their staffs any opportunity to attend the Rotorua Hunt Association's Point-to-Point meeting and Gymkhana, at Arawa Park. Chess in Rotorua It is claimed for the Rotorua Ghess Club that the standard of its members' play is very creditable. In support of this claim is the fact that in the five inter-club matches played since the club's formation, its top board has not suffered defeat. In the telegraphic match with Te Aroha concluded on Saturday the games at the two top hoards are being adjudicated upon, but a favourable decision in regard to No. 1 is confidently anticipated by members of the. club. Visiting Aeroplanes The new and speedy mode of travelling, by aeroplane, is gaining in popularity in New Zealand. Yesterday afternoon, Captain White brought a passenger to Rotorua from Gisborne, returning after spending about an hour on business in the town. Another 'plane owned by Mr. G. Goodwin, and flown by Flying Officer C. M. Duthie, both of Wellington, arrived in Rotorua on Sunday afternoon. This machine is a two-seater Avro-Avian biplane. and it has been doing considerable flying around 'the district since its arrival. Messrs. Goodwin and Duthie intend to return to Wellington to-day. Hunt Trophies Some of the trophies to he presented to the winners of events held during the Rotorua Hunt Association's Gymkhana, which commenced yesterday, are on show in the window of Miss Macdermott's shop in Tutanekai Street. There are two cups, one presented by Messrs. R. R. Gordon and J. L. Roberts, of Whakatane, for the winner of the lightweight steeplechase, and the other presented by Mr. B. M. Myers, of Auckland, for the best juvenile rider. Other trophies on view are, a eut crystal rose bowl, presented by Mr. H. C. Hardcastle, of Rotorua, and for the winner of the ladies' steeplechase a silver muflin dish, presented by Messrs. Walker and Hall, Ltd., of Sheffield and Auckland. Match With Te Puke. At last night's meeting of the Rotorua Cricket Sub-Association, a request was received from the Te | Puke Club for a match against a Rotorua eleven at Rotorua on Labour Day. It was decided to make arrangements for the game and it was reported that the wicket on the Government grounds should be in good order for the match. Properly Turned Out. "I am going to bring up a matter which will make me pretty unpopular," said Mr R. G. Webb, at last night's meeting of the Rotorua Cricket Sub-Association. "I refer to the manner in which some of our players turn ont for representative fixtures. I think that when a man is selected for a representative team, he should 'be properly turned out. Other members agreed with Mr. Webb and the matter passed without fnrther discussion. Rugby Juniors Replace Seniors. Some of the senior Rugby players did not turn up on Saturday until late, for the match against Ponsonby, and Mr A. L. Wallace took it upon himself to replace them with juniors. He considered that it would be a lesson to the seniors for the careless way in which they regarded a match with a visiting team and stated, that, as the Ponsonby team had visited Rotorua with no expense to their union he considered their action was a gratuitous insult. Mr Wallace's action was approved of by the union at its meeting last night. Country Party Candidate Mr. D. R. F. Campbell, the" Country Party candidate for the Rotorua electorate will hold a meeting in St. Luke's Hall, Rotorua, at 2.30 p.m. j on Friday, September 25, when he will deal with the present child welI fare system. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, will be in the chair and the address should be of partieular interest to members of the various women's organisations in the* town. In the evening, Mr. Campbell will speak in the Ngongotaha Hall at 8 o'clock when he will deal with agricultural education and a local settlement policy. Single Men's Camps In connection with the scheme for single men's relief camps recently initiated by the Unemplpyment Board, the Public Works Department in the Rotorua district has now completed engineering surveys and other preparations which will provide work for as many as 200 men if camps are established in the district under the scheme.
