FOOTBALL RIOT

UGLY SITUATION. The high feeling that prevailed during the third quarter of the Australian Rules game, at Erskineville Oval on Saturday afternoon, culminated in spectators invading the playing area, and it took officials all their time to prevent a serious disturbance. The crowd seethed with excitement from the start of the match, and when, during the third quarter, a fracas occurred on the field, resulting in a player being laid out, spectators swarmed on to the ground. One fiercely attacked a South's man. Most of the players gathered in angry groups, and for a while the situation looked extremely ugly. The joint efforts of the field umpire, a policeman, and the more levelheaded of the players soon restored order. During the concluding stages of play, a lot of feeling Was displayed, and the game became difficult to control.
