The decision affects 600 claimants, who have brought suits aggregating £1,000,000 against the companies. The owners had sought to limit the liability to £18,000, the value of the cargo sunk. The Larnport-Holt liner Vestris sank at sea 300 miles off Hampton Roads, on November 12, 1928. Upwards of 100 lives were reported lost.
