CHINESE FORCES SHELLED IN BARRACKS BUT DO NOT REPLY TROOPS ALLEGED OUT OF HAND Rec. Sept. 20. 5.5 p.m.

— Convrisrht.

By Telephone—

SHANGHAI, Saturday. A Mukden telegram reports that the Japanese are shelling the Chinese quarter in Mukden and the Chinese military barracks. Eighty deaths are reported in one camp alone by mid-night. Captain Makamura, who was attached to the Japanese forces, disappeared several weeks ago. The ! evidence of investigators suggests i that he was murdered in Japanese | terricory. This is a similar case to Mr John Thorburn, a young British sub.'ect, who disappeared near Shanghai last June. Eiforts to secure satisfaction failed and the present outbrealcs are believod to be Japanese reprisals. The Japanese civil authorities declare that they are unable to prevent their soldiers from firing and it is assumed that they are entirely out of hand. Firing is continuing, sheF's falling every ten minutes without a reply from the Chinese. The Chinese have been ordered by Mai shal Chang-lIseuh-Liang, the Marchurian war lord and YTice-Com-mander of the Nationalist Army, to deposit their arms at the depot and not to retaliate. The Japanese are now reported to be attacking Tungtaiyung in the nortli, having seized the Chinese Chief of Staff, General Yung Chang.
