A rare old print, picked up for a song in an Auckland second-hand shop the other day, shows a physician of the period ' in vvis', long coat, kneehreeches and | three-cornered hat, entering a sick cham- 1 ber, the knob of his qane pressed against ; his nose. The eane was an important item of every doctor's outfit in days of old. The hollow knob of ivory, silver or gola, eontained snuff as a protection ' against infection. Tobacco is certainly j a "vvonderful disinfeetant. Perhaps that is why doctors to-day are generally great j smcikers, But lcnow-ing the deadly nature ; of nicotine they are eareful t-o select a ! tobacco as free from the poison as pos- I sibie. No difficulty about that — in New j Zealand, because our tobacco (unlike the j imported whieli is generally full of nico- j tine) is toasted in the proeess of manu- ! facture, and thus rendered safe to smoke j to any extent.
