one million spent on monte carlo beach luxury on riviera A bathing beach that cost £..,000,000 and is unique in 4he world, and a Tennis City that cost £500,000 are Monte Carlo's latest glories. They are the prlncipal attractions at a country club, which was opened for the first time ito-night. Tha club, which is situated at St. Roman, on the eastern frontier of Monaco, has been fashioned out of a deserted mountain side sloping down to a barren seashore. Two hotels, rie'staurants, and cafes have sprung up where once was waste land. The tennis courts of the club arebuilt in tiers overlooking one another and intersected with pathways ancl stairways surmounted by piergolas covered with creeping rose trees. Wonderful Clubhouse. The ground had to be cui out of the mountain side and the tiers supported by huge granite walls. The clubhouse, said to he one ofi the largcst of its kind in the world, has a basement of 12,000 squafie yards, and is frtted with all the latest devices for comfort which human ingenuity could devise. Sand was hrought from miles away for the construct-ion oi the magnificent beach. Just off the shore a small island has sprung up for the benefit of bathers, and wonderful entertainments are to be staged there. On a terrace a quarter of a mile long, shaded by pergolas covered with creeping plants, is a line of dielightfully fitted cabins, and in front of the very smart and cool restaurant is the huge swimming pool tiled in sea-blue. A harbour and two piers have been built for the conveniience of visitors who come to the club in yachts and speed-boats.
