LOCAL AND GENERAL

Roads in Good Order Roads in the Rotorua Publie Works district are reported to have come through the winter very well, and are now generally in very good order. The Rotoua-Taupo, CambridgeTaupo, Cambridge-Rotorua, Rotorua- , Whakatane, and the Tauranga xnain highways are all in good surface and repair, while 168 miles of secondary highways also* nxaintained by the Departxnent are also in very satisfactory condition. The only bad patch in a good system, is the Atiamuri Road between the 15 and 19-mile pegs where the road urgently requires reconstruction and metalling. Inquest Opened The inquest into the death of the late Mrs. Ngawhapipi Taua, who was killed in a level crossing aceident at Ngongotaha on Wednesday, was opened by the Coroner, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., at Ngongotaha yesterday, when formal evidence of identification was taken from the deceased's son, Peter Taua. The inquest was then adjourned until 2.15 p.m. on Tuesday of next week. | Big Sewerage Extension The work of extending the sewerage reticulation to the lower end of Malfroy Road is now almost completed. This work is one of the most considerabfe sewerage extensions unclertaken in the borough and takes in 18,000 feet of additional sewerage which will extend the service to approximately 200 houses between Ranolf Street and Old Taupo Road. Roading Work at Ngakuru Two contracts for the metalling of five mile and three mile stretches of road on the Ngakuru block have been let to two different firms of contractors, Mr. F. L. Park, Public Works j engineer for the Rotorua district, in- ! formed a "Post" representative yesj terday. This road is to give access ! j to the country at present being devel- j j oped by the Lands Department for i | settlement. The work will be com- ; menced immediately. I Bankruptcy Meeting j A meeting of creditors in the bank- ! rupt estate of Whare Milca, labourer ! of Ngapuna, was called yesterday but i lapsed for want of a quorum. Bank- | rupt's papers showed a deficiency of { £101 ls 7d and there were no J assets. In his statement, bankrupt | stated that he had been struggling : for years to overcome his financial i difficulties, illness and domestic troubles; finally, however, a judgment summons had been issued j against him and he had been com- I j pelled to file his petition. Chief un- 1 recured creditors were P. M. Stewart ; s( Auckland), £32 ls;^ Wallace Supj plies (Rotorua) £25 ; W. Monk, sen- ; ior (Rotorua) £20; P. H. Castleton, | £8; O. H. 1 I Colenxan, this week attended a prac- t tice of the Boys' Band which has j been formed in Rotorua. Under 1 i Lieut. Tregilgas, the 10 boys present j played several numbers, and in spite j of the fact that they had had the I benefit of only two or three practiees, ' gave promise of developing into an | exeellent musical combination. The j instruments nsed by the boys were j those in nse by the old town band. They had been stored away for nearly ! two years and were black with age and disuse, but rescuing them from a sentence of "dumping" which had been issued, Lieut. Tregilgas succeedj ed in restoring them >to good order : with liberal applications of spirits of j ! salts and pumice. The band is mak- ! j ing more encouraging progress and i | it is probable that a publie meeting ! | will shortly be called by the Rotary | Club for the purposes of ineorporat- j ing it as a musical organisation. IVilore Unemployed . According to Mx\ E. W. McCard- t ell, assistant secretary of the Rotorua Unemployment Committee, the , work of finding employment for the j men on relief is becoming increas- f | ingly difficult, as the money . avaflable from the Government is being : gradually decreased. Another probI lem which will soon have to be faced ! will he to provide for the men whose j work on the forestry plantations will shortly come to an end. A few have [ already been put off, but within the j next fortnight it is expected that I another hundred of these forestry workers will swell the numbers of | unemployed in the town. ' Access to Galatea Estate Tenders for the metalling of fche 111 miles of main road giving access to the Galatea Estate land settlement block, have now closed. A number of tenders for the conti'act were received and an early decision is expected. Roading Work Nearing End The internal roading work throughout the Galatea Estate is now practically completed. It has taken some months to carry out this work as in some places construction proved exceedingly difficult. The length of roading to be constructed is abont 30 miles altogether. No Extra Work Several thousand acres of scrub are yet to be cleared on the Galatea Estate and a start will be made with the work in about a month's time.
