CLERK ARRESTED

CHARGE PREFERRED OF ALLEGED THEFT ROTORUA MAN IN DOCK Brought before Mr W. L. Richards, J.P., in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday, Colin Spalding Walker, a clerk in the employ of Leslie Ewart, pro vision merchant of Rotorua and formerly assistant town clerk of Rotorua, was remanded on substantial bail, on a charge of theft from his employer. Although the amount mentioned in the charge was only £1, it was indieated by the police that further charges of a similar nature were pending and would involve an amount of approximately £200 Sergeant Harvey, who appeared for the police, made application for a remand for the usual eight day period, and this was not opposed by Mr J. D. Davys, who represented Walker. ' Mr Davys, in making application for bail, drew the attention of the Bench to the fact that the amount mentioned in the charge was small but Sergeant Harvey stated that further charges were pending and that an amount in the vicinity of £200 would probably be involved. Accused had only been arrested that morning, and the police had not yet had time to prepare their case. Walker was accordingly remanded to appear before the Magistrate in Rotorua on Wednesday, September 23. and bail was fixed in accused's own recognisance of £100 and two outside sureties of £100 each. The sureties were advanced individually by Marie Ida Blakely, married woman of Rotorua and her husband Thomas Guthrie Blakely. At the request of the police both bailees were examined as to their mgans and sfucceeded in satis'fying the Bench that they were in a position to advanee the sureties.
