TELEVISION
NGW POSSlBLE IN tOLOUR new inyention tested A writer ih the London Daily Mai] says — I am able to make the first annouricement ih this country of an invention which opens up the possibility of television pictures in natural colour. Already it has enabled a picture to be televised on to a screen 10 feet square, instead of the ordinary size of a few inches. The secret of the invention is a new form of lamp which can give a light many times more powerful than tiie special small lamps, filled with neoh gas, which have hitherto been considered most suitable. The lamp 'has been invented by Mr U: S. Sanabria, a distinguished television research expert in the United States. The principle of his .invehtioa is the heating of the gas in the lamp so that it glows with a much more powerful light than has hitherto been obtained. Whereas neon lamps require a mlnJmum of 140 volts foi* operation, it is found that with the heated ^gas the new lamps cairbe maintained in a glowihg cdndition with 20 volts. ThN adds to the efficiency of the lamp for television purposes by making it respond to wealcer signals or images.: With the "heater" type of lamp ot'her gases besides neon can be used, With equal light effects, and as various gases glow with different colours, pictures can be feceived as well as in the usual pinic colour given by neon gaS. Experimchts- are to be made with three lamps in use at once, giving the primary colours or red, blue -and yellow, and it is expectecl that it will ;,e possible to combiiie them iii such a wAy as to give full hatural colour transmisisori and reception.
