T: Jackson), Crs. G. Urquhart, 0. H. Coleman, E. T. Johnson, N- M. Keane, Albert Smith, W. Galbraith, and W. H. Wackrow. Apologies for absence were received from Crs L. J. Bayf eild and H. Tai Mitche.lb. The General Compai^te.e reported baving considered. a copy of the bpilding construction bill, together with a letter from the. Hastings Borpugh Council, and having written to the Hon, the Prime Minister and Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., suggesting that the fee to be eharged by the Government should be obe-eight per cent instead of one-quarter per cent as was suggested, and that any surplus over knd aboVe' the' cost of administration should be applied to the Department of Seientific and Industrial Research. It iaas been further suggested that the Government should draft model bylaws. In connection with this letter, His Worship said he understood that the Government intended to give effect to the Council's suggestion to reduce the 'payment of intending builders from one-quarter per cent to one-eighth per cent. The .Mayor aisq reported that he had submitted a definite proposal to Messrs. Cooper and Cavanagh in connection with the dispute over the use of the telephone on the Arawa Street taxi stand. He was hopeful that the dispute would be settled, but having made a proposai he was not prepared to carry the matter furtlier. Abattoir Matters The General Committee reported having instructed the engineer to siiik a fresh well at the abattoir for the purpose of augmenting the water silpply, which is running very low, and having authorised him to carry out the work as far as possible as a relie'f work under No. 5 scheme. The abattoir mariager reported that dtiring the month of August there were killed for human consumption within the abattoir area — 99 cows, 75 ox, 6 calves, 709 sheep, 29 lambs, and 111 pigs. One cow was wholly condemned for peretonitis and 11 and 2 * ox were partially condemned for tubereulosis. One pig was wholly condemned for peretonitis and 11 partially condemned for tubereulosis. One sheep was condemned as fevered and one partially condemned • for arthritis. Publicity and Amusements The Publicity and Amusements Committee recommended that the musical director be perniitted to.act as choirmaster for the. Ohinemutu, Anglican Church Choir, and as conductor of the Rotorua Male Choir. It was also recommended that the support of the Council he given to the newly formed Combined Orchestra and that the musical director's services be made available as conduetor, subject to satisfactory arrangements being made for the Council to obtain the services of the orchestra when required. These recommendations were adopted together with a further recommepdation that the Council urge on the Government the necessity for proceeding with the construction of the adult portion of the Blue Bath. It was reported that the Tourist Department had taken steps to provide lighting in the Government Gardens. Engineer's Report The engineer reported that owing to wet weather, streets had taken considerable extra attention. The machine grader had been in use on the streets and main highways fairly eonstantly. Devon Street west of Ranolf Street had been repaired and Wylie Street, Marguerita Street, Ililda Street, Old Taupo Road and othe'rs had been partly pumiced. Portion of Old Taupo Road from Pukuatua Street towards the south had been coated with local metal. Work on Eruera Street, for which a grant had been obtained, had been commehced.

The Rotorua-Cambridge main highway had been widened on the hill near the Roman Catholic Church. This portion was dangerously narrow. An old culvert across the intersection with Taiwhakea Street had been removed. Two new culverts had been put in in the western side of the road and the old ones removed. A further coating of metal would be required when the p'reseiit coat had consolidated under traffic. Other portions of this road required wideriing and strengthening. A coating o'f third-class metal had been pui on the Rotorua-Whakatane ihain highway from Fenton Street towards Ti Street. This road had been bladed over several times but tKe wet weather had put it into pot holes almost immediately afterwards. Pumice had been placed at ihe Puarenga bridge end of the road. All trees and shrubs had been removed from the cemetely reServe nursery. Some were used to replace dead ones in the streets. The remaining viminalis gums had been planted on the quarry reserve. The balance had been planted in the new nurseby in Mr. Urquhart's grounds. The Reserves Committee recominended that after the. oats in the Towh Belt had b'een. harvested, the fence line of the entrance to the High SeKool from Pererika • Street be removed back to the alignmenfc of the west side of Ann Streetj provided the High School Board bore the whole cost bf such improvemeritS'and- carried out a tree p'lanting scheme to be subihitted to and approved by the DonTahrBbafd. .
