SUGGESTED CHANGE
PROPOSAL NEGATIVED MAIN ROUTE IttTO BOROUGH A recommendation from the Works Committee that the Rotorua Borough Council take into consideration the advisability of recommending to the Main Highways Board that the route into the Borough via the Old Taupo Road and Pukuatua Street be declared a main highway instead of the present route via Lake Road and Tutanekai Street was debated at Friday's meeting of the Council. The recommendation was made on account of the expense of the formation of Lake Road and the danger from steam rising off the .KLuirau pool, but after discussing the pros and cons, it was decided to d'elete the recommendation from the report. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, pointed out that if the suggested new route was declared a main highway, the Council would lose all subsidy on the present Lake Road and would be saddled with the whole cost of maintenance. Also, if the Pukuatua Street route was used as a main highway, it would bring the main entrance of the High School also in close proximity to a railway crossing, on to an arterial route. Councillor O. H. Coleman, said that the Council would not gain anything by the change as the traffic would still follow tbe old route. Councillor Albert Smith announced that after hearing his Worship's argument with regard to the High School, he had changed his mind. The danger of the change had not struck him when previously considex-ing the proposal. A suggestion was made that the engineer should be asked to report upon the proposal, but this did not find support and on the motion of Councillor W. Galbraith, the recommendation was deleted from the report.
