SICKENING FEELING

Press Association —

SEVERE EARTH TREMOR IS FELT IN HASTINGS PEOPLE RUSIi INTO OPEN

Copyriaht.

By Telephone — "Post" Special Sei'vice. HASTINGS, Saturday. A severe earth tremor lasting four minutes, and eomparable in intensity to the secondary earthquakes which followed the great earthquakes of February 12 and February 13, was felt here this morning. The 'qualce began at 9.50. It opened with a swaying movement, which gradually became intensified till, halfway through its duration, it "developed a jolt similar to those felt in the big 'quakes, but less severe. It then slowly died away in a continuation of swaying movements. Mr. H. Dedenne reports that his seismograph showed the duration as four minutes. He says the tremor was apparently local in Hastings and Napiei\ The needle jumped to and fro across the whole width of the chart for a full minute. There was a good deal of alarm felt in the town where people ran out from shops and offices into the safety of backyards. It was altogether a sickening and disconcerting experience for most people. No damage is reported.
