* LONDON, Thursday. Perhaps never in British political history, apart from during the Great War, has there been such a sweeping Budget. Taxation and economies in which a deficit of £71,000,000 is met "in one go" has been received with such equinimity by the people, aware that they are faced with a serious crisis :md schooled in a brief fortnight to ,i realisation of the great national (acrifice which is inevitable, that there is a noticeable absence of the shoal of criticism which has followed In the wake of every taxation and economy budget since the war. The greatest surprise was the increase in the income tax which already was the highest in the world. Nevertheless, there is remarkable unanimity of oplnion' that Mr Snowden lias done the best in a critical situation. The motorist, whose voice has been raised in a loud protest with each "ucceeding petrol impost, accepts the additional tax as inevitable. His sentiments are summed up by "The Automobile" thus "In this time of national crisis all concerned must take :he long view." The same is not ipparent among big users of petrol. Omnibus companies say the tax will be a great blow to industries. As an illustration of the changes ?n the insurance benefit (dole), where 3, man with a wife and two children has received 30/- weekly, he will iow receive 27/3.
