Meeting The members of the Rotorua branch of the Workers' Educational Association will hold their usual monthly meeting in the club rooms at 7.30 p.m. this. evening. The subject of the readir.g will be the miniature comedy, "Elizabeth Refuses," modelied on Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice?" DafiFodil fshow Next Week. St. Luke's 26th annual Dalfodil At Home and Spring Flower Show will be held in the Peerless Hall on Wednesday next Se'ptember 16. The show will be open in both the afternoori and the evening and an exceptionally fine colleetion of hlooms is expected to be show. Slips and. Trees Heavy rain and boisterous weather on the Motu Hill has made the Gis-borne-Rotorua route particularly difficult for motorists at present. Service car drivers who made the trip yesterday reported (on arrival in Rotorua that small slips were across the road and that in places trees had also fal- , len partially across the route. The drivers were able to negotiate their cars past the obstructions, however, and immediate steps were taken to clear the road. More Snow Service cars arriving in Rotorua last evening reported two heavy snow falls on the Taupo-Napier Road. Further heavy drifts have accnmulated on the Tauranga-kuma hill but cars were able tb make the trip without being held up. Touring Footballers Four R.M. cars will leave Rotorua on Sunday to pick up the touring Australian Rugby team at Hamilton and bring them through to Rotorua. The cars will take the visitors on a tour of the local scenic and thermal attractions and will also visit Wairakei. Meteorological Oasis Rotorua at present appears to be in a speeies of meteorological oasis. Further snowfalls- were reported yesterday in the high country to the south-east of Taupo, while reports from- Auckland last evening stated that heavy rain commenced to fall there at 8 o'clock and had- become general throughout the district. In Rotorua, however, although temperatures were cold, the barometer had a rising tendency and no rain had fallen. Progress at Ngakuru "We have 2000 acres of land already grassed and stocked and next week we will conmence grassing another 2000 acres," said Mr R. P. Hill, field instructor at the Ngakuru lands settlement block, and supervisor of the Government experimental farm at Ngakuru, to a "Post" representative yesterday. "This last 2000 acres will be only the spring sowing," he continued," for in the autumn we hope to sow another 15000 acres. As the. land is brought in it will be stocked with pieked cattle." Events for Gymkhana Severa'l interesting and novel events are set down for the Rotorua Ifunt Association's wind-up week. There are thre'e steeplechase events, a heavy-weight, a light-weight and a ladies' event. A five furlong flat race, on handicap, for juvenile owner riders of 15 years and under is also on the programme. Besides these main events, there are novelties and hunting competitions. Hunt Cltub's Wind-up Week A committee meeting of the Rotorua Hunt Association took place on Monday to finalise arrangements for the wind-up week to be held next month. The secretary of the Association, Mr. E. La Trobe Hill, when visited by a "Post" representative yesterday, reported that keen interest is being displayed in the point to point steeplechase and the gymkhana/ Fire Brigade Snooker Match A snooker match was played at the Rotorua Fire Station on Wednesday evening between teams from the Geyser Lodge of Oddfellows and the Rotorua Fire Brigade. Following are the seores, the lodge players being mentioned first: — R. Bould 8, lost to H. Balsden 50; K. Dohnt 54 beat F. Briggs, 27; B. Harvey, 42 lost to J. Shiels, 44; R. Lewis, 42 lost to R. Tucker, 48; W. Goddard, 26 lost to P. Munro, 62; L. Riddle 47, beat T. Middleton, 37. The brigade won by 268 points to 219. Devon Street Card Evening Despite the inclement weather on Wednesday evening a fair numher of card players %ssembled at Devon Street Hall for the card tournament. The games were elosely contested and were very enjoyable. A novel eompetition varied the evening's amusement. Mrs. Speneer proving to be the winner. A mirror, kindly donated by Mr. Percy Sherriff bronght forward quite a lot of competition, and was eventually won by Mrs. W. T. Brown.
