HOSPITAL BOARDS
LARGE GRANT ASKED FOR WELLINGTON, Thursday. A deputation oi New Zealand hospital boards waited on the Prime Minister with a request for a grant of £100,000 towards the hospital boards of the Dominion, to cope with the increased demand for outdoor relief. The Prime Minister said he fully recognised the valuable work that had been done by the hospital boards, and he realised the difficulties they were up against because of the abnormal demands for outdoor relief. However, the problem was a difficult one because every increasing grant that was made was swallowed up and that process could not go on indefinitely. The Government had to take a stand to keep the finances within reasonable bounds and endeavour to prevent the problem from becoming a permanent one. He recognised however, that something would have to be done to provide further assistance for the boards. He promised to go carefully into the matter with a view to giving them further aid. The Prime Minister said he also recognised the tremendous value of. voluntary work at the prent time.
