Bill snoozes, too, upon his bracken bed, Polks call us "kids" because we're young', And class us as the chumps among, But our young brains are fresh and bright To sense the gulf 'twixt wrong and right. A rare old print, picked up for a song in an Auckland second-hand shop ,the other day, shows a physician of the period in wig, long coat, kneebreeches and three-cornered hat, entering a sick chamber, the knob of Jajs cane pressed against his nose. The cane was an important item of every doctor's outfit in days of old. The hollow knob of ivory, silver or gold, contained snuff as _a protection against infection. Tobacco ' is certainly a wonderful disinfectant. Perhaps that is why doctors to-day are generally great smokers. But knowing the deadly nature of nicotine they are careful to select a tobacco as free from the poison as possible. 17o difficulty about that — in New Zealand, because our tobacco (unlike the imported which is generally full of nicotine) is toasted in the process of manufacture, and thus rendered safe to smoke to any extent. To toasting, also, it owes its unequalled flavour and incomparable bouquet. There are only four brands: Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10. 107 •
