NEW YORK, Tuesday. Following an ass'ertion of the Secretary of Labour, Mr Boak, that "Several of our so-called outstanding citizens will soon be arrested," local Federal authorities have revealed that 19 persons including a lawyer and three Government clerks have been apprehended in connection with alleged smuggling operations of considerable proportions, whereby some eight thousand European aliens have been brougbt into^the United States over the Canadian border, The authorities declined to reveal the full particulars, but the charges suggest that the smugglers specialised in the importation of criminals to a large extent. Government agents are now searching the country for eight of the ring's "clients" who possess lengthy international crime records. Moreover, it appears that after the delivery of the aliens in the-Eastern States at prices varying from 100 dollars to 5000 dollars, the smugglers proceeded to blackmail those they smuggled in with threats of deportation if they refused to pay additional revenue to members of the ring. Further arrests are expected shortly. Several Canadians are believed to be involved.
