LONDON, Wednesday. There was a noisy crowd of 2000 persons in Whitehall at ten o'clock last night, the unruly element consisting of agitators and leaders of the unemployed, who demanded an interview with the Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, as a protest against reductions in social expenditure. The police finally made a baton charge. A crowd of young Communists around the Cenotaph, who refused to disperse, hooted the police until a charge by mounted policemen cleared the streets. The disorders in the vicinity of the Houses of Parliament, which continued throughout the evening, were serious, and 1000 foot police, in addition to mounted police, were required to cope with the unruly crowd. Whitehall was jammed with humanity, including the crowds watching the illuminations. Many were knocked down and trampled upon during the mounted charges. Police motor-cars drove rouiid Parliament Square to prevent the re-assembly of demonstrators. Three persons were taken to hospital and 17 were arrested.
