PROMINENT MAN
RETIRES AFTER TWENTYNINE YEARS' BUSINESS EXPERIENCE. Mr J. G. McQuiston, general advertising manager of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Gompany, East Pittsburgh, Pa., and one of the most widely-known advertising executives in the nation, has announced his retirement, effective on June 1. He has been in oharge of Westinghouse advertising for 29 years. It is understood he will make a trip around the world with his wife and daughter, Mr McQuiston has served as president of the Assooiation of National Advertisers and the Pittsburgh Advertising Club, and has been active Tn association work in ihe electrieal and allied industries. n He was a strong believer in newspaper advertising, and inT927 attracted wide attention by conducting a national campaign for Westinghouse in newspapers only — something which other men insisted could not bfe done effeetively. Later, in announcing the satisfactory results, he said — "The newspapers offer the manufacturer an opportunity to 'spotlight' his advertising in a very definite way, focusing its force on an industry in those cities and towns largely built up and supported by that industry. The newspaper is itself a vital factor in any community's prosperity, and has an intimate relationship with every phase of local interest. Therefore in using the newspaper for your advertising message you are using a medium that has a substantial looal prestige and in it you can make a very direct and intimate appeal. Particularly when you give local addresses and telephone nu-mbers your newspaper advertising becomes even more closely allied to commnnity interests."
