GREEN RESEARCH INCREASED MEMBERSHIP The report of the New Zealand Golf A.ssociation, to he preserited at the J annnal meeting at Christchurch in j Oetober, shows that the revenue for j the year was £1338 0s lOd, a5 compar- ! ed with £1261 17s for the preceding j year. This year5s revenue comprised I subseriptions, £1285 16s; interest on J deposits, £31 0s 9d; and sundry rej ceipts, including gate money at the j championship meeting, £929 15s ld, in I addition to which £100 was votsd towards the fund for the relief of clubs which suffered in the earthquake, and £10 10s was voted to the New Zealand Sports Protection Deague in recognition of the efforts on behalf of the sports clubs. The surplus of revenue for the year was £297 15s 9d, which, transferred to the aecumulated fund, malces the total surplus of funds £539 14s 8d. The considerable inerease over the surplus at the end of the preceding year is due to two factn: Firstly, that it was decided, in view of economic conditions here and in Australia, to suggest to the New South Wales Golf Adsociation that the visit of the Kirk-Windeyer team to Sydney he postponed unail 1932, and this the authorities on the other side willingly agreed to. Secondly, It was decided that a3 the autumn tournament for profassionalg has never been partieularly well supported by the players, this fixture b'e cancelled for the present year. Increased Membership. During the year 16 clubs joined the association, making the membership at the end of the financial year 189, as against 173, 159 and 148 in the preceding three years. Since the close of our financial year three small clubs have "resigned and one new club has heen elected. The association5s professionals have not had a very busy season, due, no doubt, to prevailing conditions. Norman Fuller was appointed for twelve months from 1st April, 1931, and Arthur Pass had a temporary engagement which terminated on 10th July. Following on the resolution passed at the- annual general meeting of del■egateg at Palmerston North a cirCular was sent out to all affiliated clubs on the question df the establishment of a board of green-keeping research, and asking clubs to advise as to i whether they would he prepared to i pay an annual levy inot exceding'ls I per membc-r towards the promotion of : this research work. As the support promised hy clubs was far from encouraging, the council adopted a modified scheme hy the appointment of an advisory committee on green-keep-ing .research, consisting of Messrs. F. W. Hobhs and M. H. Godby (Christchurch), Eric M. Russell (Invercargill), W. A. Kiely (Wellington), and A. Seifert (Palmerston North). Steps are being taken hy this committee to co-operate with the Plant ResearcJa Station at Palmerston North and with the Manawatu Golf Club, which has generously placed land at the disposal of the committee for experimental purposes. The Advisory Committee has informed the council that it hopes to have its first bulletin ready for issue at an early date. The council decided to invite those clubs in other than the earthquake area to contribute to a fund for the assistance of the clubs which have suffered. Up to the 31st July subseriptions received from clubs amounted to £140 4s 6d, to which was added £100 from the general funds of the association (on an almost unanimous vote of ths affiliated clubs). A few further small amounts have come in since the 31st July, and the council is now awaiting "a report from a subcommittee established in Hawkes Bay, consisting of Messrs. F. C. Fryer, E. A. Murley, and C. O. Carrell, who are to recommend the proportion of assistance to be given to each of the affected clubs.
