GOLF CONTEST
VETERANS GATHER FOR FOURTH ANNUAL CUP TOURNEYKEEN CONTEST EXPECTED The ever increasing interest that has been' taken by New Zealand's veteran golfers in the annual Veterans' Cup contest is amply demonstrated by the number of entrants, since the cup's presentation in 1928. The first year there were only 24 participants in the contest, in 1929 there were 31 and the year following 32. This year the number s have shown a most encouraging increase, and 50' competitors are already entered for the tournament. The cup was presented, for the Rotorua Golf Club's Veterans' Tournament, in 1928, by Mr P. W. Wilkie, a present patron of the club. .. The tropliy is a magnificent example of the silversmith's art and is of striking design. Former winners of the trophy are: 1930, Colonel J. Hughes, of Miramar; 1929, W. W. Maingay, of Te Aroha; and 1928, C. II- Redhead, of Rotorua. All of these former victors are ment, and according to bearsay are again entered for this year's tournajust as determined as ever to have thair name . again placed on. the cup. Runner-up lasfc year was. G. H. Seott, of Miramar. He had again entered for this year, but unfortunately, illness has prevented his particpiation in the contest, thu.s eliminating one of the most 'enthusiastic competitors for the prize. Low Handicap Men. Among the well known, low handicap golfers competing for the cup are H. Gillies, of Hamilton, handicap, 6; C. Kusabs, Rotorua, 5; A. M. Howden, Auckland, 7; A. W. Gillies, Auckland, 9; W Colbeck, Auckland, 7; W. D. Ross Frankton, 8; D. McCormick, Auckland, 6; E. H. Liddley, Miramar, 7; F. Trice, Glendowie, 7. Frorn this it can he seen that there promises to he a high standard of play. Great disappointment bas been expressed both by Rotorua and visiting golfers at the inability of J. B. McEwen of Wellington, to compete this year. Mr. McEwen, has unfortunately been prevented from partieipatihg owing to pressure of business. . S'everal of the contestants have passed their three iscore years and ten, but on their handicaps they will he extremely hrard to beat. Age means •experience, and experience is more than half the battle in golf.
From InceptionThe name of C. Kusabs, of Rotorua, has been among the entries, ' every year since the inception of the tournament, and he is an experienced and steady player. He was local club champion for fourteen years from 1908. The Rotorua Club's oldest member, Mr T. Hallett, who has reached his 84th year, has for weeks past, been waiting with enthusiapm the commencement of the tournament. Unfortunately, however, Mr Hallett has become indisposed at the last minute, and will not now be able to participate. H. Trice was runner-up for the Veterans' Cup in 1929, and is an exchampion of the Glendowie Club. He plays a steady game. MeCormick, of Auckland, is still playing a fine game, and still has the knack of surprising his opponets with his putting. He has been runner-up for the Middlemore championship and is particularly dangerous in the short game. The president of the Auckland Golf Club, Middlemore, Mr H- Horton, is also iilcluded in the contestants. During the provincial championships recently, he got as far as the demi-semi-linals. If this form continues he should be among the tops. 'Hamilton, of .Auckland, is another low Imndicap man, who is likely to be ; hard opposition.
