EXTENSfON OF SUBSIDIES TO LOCAL BODIES. BILL PASSED.
. WELLINGTON, last night. With only one protest, the Finance ■ Bill No. 3, extending for a further 12 months the charging of subsidies to local bodies in respect of genera] rates to the Main Highways fund, instead of the Consolidated fund, and validating the reduction by one-half per cent. in interest paid by private banks, was passed by the House of Represenatives to-day. Mr. A. S. Ansell (Chalmers) said he wished to record his protest against the Bill. He realised the difficult position with which the country was faced, but he contended that if they were going to afford relief to any section of taxpayers it should be to the farmers, who were experiencing a most difficult time.
