. Py Telephone —

(Rec. 12.45 a.m.). CANTERBURY, Friday. New Zealand narrowly averted an innings defeat against Kent. The side made a poor showing against the accurate bowling of Marriott" and Freeman, and was dismissed at its second strike for the mediocre total of 159. At the luncheon interval yesterday, Kent had made 143 for f our wickets, and the innings closed for 437. The New Zealanders at stumps had lost three wickets for 62 runs. Magnificent batting by Woolley gave Kent a first innings' lead of 111 runs) and at stumps '''New Zealland, with seven wickets in hand, were still 49 runs behind. The New Zealanders' weak catching was largely responsible for Kent's good score. Woolley attacked the bowling from the start. He was missed early by Matheson at short slip off Merritt, and played beautiful free shots all round 'the wicket, his driving being especially fine. After passing the centpry he gave three chaneys in the outfield to Blunt, Mills, and Allcott, but finally Blunt made amends. Woolley's innings lasted 184 minutes, and included five sixes and 24 fours. With Ames he added 277 for the fifth wicket. Ames gave two chances, but generally his was a sound display, lasting 168 minutes, and including one six and 14 fours. Scores : — Kent — First Innings.
