EPIC RACES RECALLED. CONQUEROR OF "PLUGGER" BILL MARTIN AND v- OTHER CHAMPIONS. Ken Lewis, one of the foremost rac- | ing cyclists in Australia in the nineties, died recently at his 'home in South Melbourne at the age of 59. In the palmy days of the sport Ken Lewis proved himself to he a fine racing cyclist, def eating such wellknown champions as " Plugger " Bill Martin (U.S.A.) and other internationals. Born at Kyneton in 1&72, Lewis, while still young proved himself to be a particularly fine cyclist. A powerfully built athlete, he possessed great endurance, and was noted for his form over short apd long distances. In 1892 he came to New Zealand, and in that year he won the quarter mile, one mile, three miles, and flve miles championships of the Dominion against fields of hrilliant cyclists. PrO'bably ■ his most successful riding in New Zealand was done in 1894. In that year he hroke the records for ihe quarter mile, lialf mile, one mile and 50 miles. In Australia he was almost as successful. He compeLed against all the most prominent cyclists of the day, including G. R. Broadbent, "Newhaven" Jackson, James Carpenter, Harvy James, and Porta, the ltalian.
