INEQUITABLE RACING TAXATION.

"The taxation on racing as now imposed is inequitable, but it does not seem at all probable that there is any likelihood of relief in this direction in the immediate future. "A measure of " coinpensation could be extended to racing clubs if the law were enforced in a more drastic manner to stifie the illegal practice of bookmaking, and | wideh the facilities for the race-lov- | irig public to' invest on' the totalisator i by the telegraphing of money to meeti ings and the establishment of a dOuble totalisator. "Taxes paid by the Rotorua Club at its last meeting were: Totalisator Tax, £i470 ls 6d; Receipts and Amusement Tax, £103 8s 9d; Stakes Tax, £125 15s; and in addition the public contributed in Dividend Tax £1285 19s, a total of £2985 4s 3d. ; Against this amount there was a re^ fund of taxes of £250 allowed under certain headings, such conditions the Club was able to comply with, and the refund was granted accordingly.
