INTER-PARTY INQUIRY REASON FOR APPOINTMENT OF PARLIAMENTARY. • COMMITTEE. RUMOURS IN WELLINGTON.
Special Commissioner) .
WELLINGTON, Thursday. The circumstances of the appointment of the inter-party committee have ceased to be a point of lobby discussion, but a new angle is being given to this aspect by the circulation of rumours that the reason for the setting up of the committee was that serious defects had been. discovered in the Budget. It is asserted that no provision was made for London exchange; that the land and income tax returns disclosed a large unanticipated deficit; that the Post Office revenue had fallen amazingly and that Customs revenue had dropped almost to nothing. It is authoritatively stated that none of these rumours have any foundation. In political circles it is felt that the Ref orm Party is not f orcing the hands of the Government, but is prepared to accept full responsibility for national economy measures. There is a feeling that the Reform members of the committee will endeavour to have the Budget recast and there also appears to be a growing disposition in favour of the formation of a National Government, especially in view of what has occurred at Home.
