Lowry won the toss and New Zealand had 72 on the board without a loss, when the message was received. Talbot, Kerr and Cromb did not take the field for New Zealand. The Kent team was: Chapman, Legge, Hardinge, Woolley, Ames, Todd, Ashdown, Levett, Ballantyne, Freeman, Marriott. Freeman retired early after being struek on the shoulder while rrying to stop a powerful pull by Mills. Scores received at time of going to press were : — Dempster, not out 30 Mills, not out 42 Total for no wickets 72
