A Close Game. Kahukura juniors had a week-end away from home -on Saturday and Sun- ' day when they visited Auckland to play the junior reps. of the Eden Club and after a fast open game in which the teams proved ,to be exceptionally . well matehed, Eden won by 13—12. The Rotorua boys registered four unconverted tries to three tries, one conversion, and a penalty. On "Friday night, the Eden club entertained their visitors at a picture party. Art Union Closing. . Orgaiiised for the purpose of raising funds to enable the work of the New Zealand Bird Proteqtion Society to be extended, the "Lucky Bird" Art Union has. been given generous puhlic support. The Society carries out a valuable national work in its endeavours to protect New Zealand's birds and is deserving of the widest support. The Art Uiiion will be closed on Saturday next, so that those who wish to participate in the draw for the valuable prizes must act without delay. Tickets have been selling very well in Rotorua.* Wellington Butter Price, The wholesale price of butter in Wellington was reduced ld per lb today. The standard brands are now selling at ls 2d to ls 3d per lb. Left Behind. When the Auckland Training College basketball team returned to Auckland yesterday morning it left one of' its members, Miss Connie Silcock, behind. Miss Silcock left forher home by the afternoon train. Druids' Entertainment. Another of the Druids' five hundred tournaments, held fortnightly, will take- place to-mt'rrow even/ng in their hall in Arawa Street. During1 the evening the competition to raise funds for the hall will be drawn. Rifle Match Postponed. The miniature rifle match between representatives of the Rotorua Rotorua Returned Soldiers and the Arawa Rifle Club, which was to have taken place to-morrow night, has been postponed until Wednesday, September 2, on account of the absence on duty of Staff Sergt-Major W. Bates. Indian Situation. According to an Indian business man who was a visitor to Rotorua yesterday, the present crisis in India is one which threatens the whole stability of the existing regime. Backed up by a body of influential and very able countrymen, Mahatma Gandhi, the Nationalist leader, was endeavouring* to expel the European mis?ions as a preliminary to upsetting the whole of the civil administration. The only department of the existing "raj" to which Gandhi was favourably disposed was the medical services. The whole situation for months past had been most critical and the fate of India appeared to be hanging in the balance. Ruahine Hockey Team. Arrivals in Rotorua to-day will inculde a ladies' hockey team from Dannevirke, who will spend two nights here prior to leaving for Auckland to compete in the Dominion championships at the end of the weelc. Opportunity has been taken of the visit to arrange a match for the visitors against the Rotorua ladies' hockey representatives, who are also leaving this week for the championship tourney. The match will be played at the Government Grounds to-morrow afternoon, and it will be interesting to see how the local team shapes against what is reputed to be the strongest team in the North Island. Ruahine, incidentally, is the first team Rotorua will meet in Auckland where they will play them on Saturday next. High School JBoard. Prior to the speci'al meeting of the Rotorua High School Board, held last evening, to consider a scheme for introducing a comprehensive agricultural scheme into the school curriculum, the ordinary meeting of the Board was held when routine business was dealt with. There were present Messrs. R. B. Nesbit (in the chair), W. Steele, H. A. Goudie, Dr. Bertram, Archdeacon Chatterton, and Mrs I. M. Davidson. The Scullirl Government is expected to introduce legislation to compel Supreme Court judges to come under the provisions of the Federal Emergency Bill.
