LOST £2OO AT BILLIARDS.
An action to recover a sum of £2OO, alleged to have been paid as stakes, on games of billiards, was before the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland recently. The plaintiff was M. J. Schueideman, tailor, of Auckland, for whom Mr Biernacki appeared, and the d efendaut was J. O. E, Jackson, billiard-room proprietor, for whom Dr. Bamfotd acted. In his statement of claim the plaintiff stated that he visited a billiard saloon on various occasions between 27th May and 29th June, and|Jwas then induced to take part in games of chance played for stakes. The games were also played at the residence of the defendant in Victoria Avenue, Kemuera, between 11th and 25th June, 1916. As the result of the play plaintiff alleged that he lost a sum of £2OO at “least, and he now claimed this amount by reason of defendant illegally having carried on business in a billiard saloon in Queen street, near Victoria street.
« The Magistrate questioned whether such an action could be brought before the Court.
| On the application 'of Dr. Barnford, who stated that Jhis client was not at present in Auckland, the case was adjourned foi a fortnight.
