It must always be (remembered that one par cent, of lime will not last long under ordinary conditions, for it is continually being lost by precipitation and leaching, and plants consume certain quantities. It is estimated that if the lime contents fall below one-fifth per cent, manures will not act, and I have no doubt that this is the reason why such poor results are often shown when ample manures have been applied to the. soil.
