TAIHAPE NOTES.

(From Onr Own Correspondent.) The 41b loaf is now being retailed over Taihape counters at 8d cash. A public meeting was called for Friday evening at the Town Hall for the purpose of discussing the War Loan and urging upon all to assist in endeavouring to make the proposition a success. As_ only some twenty residents put in an ppearance, owing no doubt to the boisterous weather, the meeting was adjourned till Saturday evening at 9 p.m. ■ There were only fair yardings at last Wednesday’s stock sales. Competitions for sheep was keen, everything being sold. Good bullocks brought up to £l4 and a Hereford bull, £ls 10s. Local patriotic funds continue to increase. The Belgian Fund now stands at £3,624 8s 6d, Local Relief Fund at £3BO 4s lid, and the Sailors’ Day Fund at £503 17s. The annual meeting of the Taihape Presbyterian Church community was held oh Wednesday evening last, the Rev. Mr Catherwood presiding. The secretary read the Sunday School report, the Woman’s Missionary Union report, the Young Women’s Bible Class report, and the Kirk Session report. The reports went to show that all organisations were in a healthy condition and the balance sheet showed a small credit on the year’s work. After business had been disposed of a light musical programme was contributed by several of the Church members. A special meeting of the Taihape Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening foi; the purpose of fixing for the current year. The balance sheet for the year ending March 31st was received from the AuditorGeneral, duly certified and adopted. ■As compared with last year there has been an all round reduction, the General Rate being reduced from IXd in the £ to lj£d, and the lighting Rate from l-7d to l-Bd. The rates to be levied for payment and sinking fund on loans are as follows;—Loan of £6OOO.
