JAPO-CHINESE HOSTILITY.
| AFFRAY BETWEEN TROOPS. CIVILIANS IK DANGER. Reuter, Received August 17, 9 a.m. Tokio, August 16, Sensational details are given of the Chengchiatnng affray. Chinese soldiers assaulted Japanese, whereupon the only Japanese policeman in Chengchiatnng went to the barracks and remonstrated. He was shoe at and killed by a Chinese soldier. Subsequently a squad of Japanese troops approached the barracks and the Chinese fired, wounding seventeen. Newspapers assert that Chinese mobs are threatening the hundred Japanese residents of Chenchiatung. A LONG BATTLE. CHINESE MINISTER APOLOGISES. Received August 17, noon. Tokio, August 16. Official: Encounters between Japanese and Chinese at Ch'mgchiatun continued throughout the night of the 13th. The Governor at Mukden, on receiving a report, ordered the Chinese to cease, visited the Japanese Consul, and expressed the deepest regret.
